# Why review sites shape AI answers

When buyers ask AI which product to choose, review platforms often supply the evidence. Here's how that works and what to do about your profiles.

> In short: Review sites shape AI answers because assistants cite them as independent evidence and repeat the themes they find there. Find the review platforms engines cite in your category, complete your profiles, keep facts current, earn honest reviews steadily and respond to recurring complaints.

- Assistants treat review sites as independent evidence about brands.
- Recurring review themes become the words AI uses about you.
- Fake or incentivized reviews are illegal in the US and backfire.

## Why do assistants rely on review sites?

Because reviews are the closest thing to independent evidence about a product. When a buyer asks "Which CRM is easiest for a small sales team?", an assistant needs sources that compare real experiences, not only vendor claims. Review platforms provide exactly that.

Engines that search the web, such as Perplexity and ChatGPT with search, cite the pages they used ([Perplexity](https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/faq/how-does-perplexity-work), [OpenAI](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/9237897-searching-the-web-with-chatgpt)). For category and comparison questions, you will often see review platforms among those sources: software directories such as G2 and Capterra for B2B tools, Trustpilot and marketplace reviews for consumer brands, Google reviews for local businesses, and local platforms in each market.

Reviews also reach answers that don't search the web. Review pages are part of the public web that models learn from, so the way customers describe you over years becomes part of how a model describes you.

## How do reviews change AI answers?

In three ways: they decide if you're listed, they shape how you're described, and they supply the facts that get repeated.

**Listing.** If an assistant builds a "best tools for X" answer from a review site's category page, the brands on that page are the candidates. If you have no profile, or a profile in the wrong category, you aren't in the pool.

**Description.** Assistants summarize. If dozens of reviews say "great support, steep learning curve", expect an answer that calls you "known for strong support, though setup can take time." The recurring themes become the words.

**Facts.** Review profiles often include pricing, plan names, integrations and company size. Outdated values there get repeated as current.

## Which review sites matter for your category?

The ones engines actually cite for your prompts. That list differs by category and by market, so look rather than guess.

Run your buyer prompts in each engine and note every review domain among the cited sources. After a few dozen prompts, a pattern appears: usually two to four platforms account for most review citations in a category. Those are your priorities.

Don't forget local markets. A brand selling in Türkiye or the Gulf may find that local review and complaint platforms appear in Turkish or Arabic answers, while global directories dominate English ones. [Citation tracking](https://ossvy.com/product/citation-tracking.md) records these sources per engine and market.

## How do you fix your review profiles?

Treat each priority profile like a product page. Most profiles are half-finished, which leaves the engine to fill gaps from older or less accurate sources.

1. **Claim the profile** so you can edit it and respond.
2. **Choose the right categories.** Being listed in the category buyers search for decides whether you appear in "best X" pages.
3. **Complete the facts:** pricing model, plans, integrations, supported languages and markets, company size.
4. **Match your own site.** Prices and plan names should be identical to your pricing page.
5. **Add a clear description** that says who the product is for in the first sentence.

Then set a reminder to check them whenever you change pricing or packaging. Outdated review profiles are one of the most common reasons AI answers quote old prices.

## How do you earn more reviews honestly?

Ask real customers at the right moment, make it easy, and never pay for a particular sentiment. Steady, recent reviews matter more than a one-off burst.

Good moments to ask are right after a success: a resolved support ticket, a renewal, a milestone in the product. Send a direct link to the review form. Ask every customer in the segment, not only the happy ones, because selective asking skews the picture and can break platform rules.

The legal line is clear in the US. The Federal Trade Commission's 2024 rule bans fake reviews, buying positive or negative reviews, and undisclosed insider reviews, with civil penalties for violations ([FTC](https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/news/press-releases/2024/08/federal-trade-commission-announces-final-rule-banning-fake-reviews-testimonials)). Other markets have similar consumer protection rules. Beyond the law, fake reviews tend to get removed, and a removed batch can leave a profile looking worse than before.

## How should you handle negative reviews?

Respond to them publicly, fix what's fixable, and look for the theme, not the single complaint. A recurring theme is what ends up in AI answers.

- **Reply factually and briefly.** Acknowledge the issue, explain what changed, and invite the reviewer to follow up.
- **Fix the root cause.** If ten reviews mention slow onboarding, a better reply won't change the summary. A better onboarding will, as new reviews describe it.
- **Correct outdated claims.** If a complaint is about a feature you've since added, say so in the reply with the date it shipped.

Never pressure customers to remove reviews or offer rewards for changing them. Review suppression is covered by the same FTC rule.

## How can reviews improve your own pages?

Reviews tell you which questions buyers care about and the words they use. Use that on your site, and your pages start answering the same questions the assistant is trying to answer.

Read your last 50 reviews, yours and your competitors', and sort the comments into themes: setup time, support, price, integrations, reporting, specific use cases. Then check your site against each theme:

- **Praise you can prove.** If reviewers keep praising your support, state your support hours, channels and response times on a page, in plain text.
- **Doubts you can answer.** If reviewers worry about setup, publish a short "how long does setup take?" answer with a realistic range and what it depends on.
- **Gaps you can admit.** If a feature is missing, say so on your comparison or FAQ page, along with the workaround. Honest limits are easier to trust, and assistants can repeat them accurately.

With the reviewer's permission, quote real reviews on relevant pages, with the name, role and date. A dated, attributed quote is stronger evidence than an anonymous star rating, for buyers and engines alike.

This also keeps your marketing honest. A product page that matches what customers say in reviews gives an assistant two sources that agree, and agreement between independent sources is what makes a claim safe to repeat.

Share the themes with your product and support teams too. They can fix causes that marketing can't, and the next round of reviews will reflect it.

## How do you know it's working?

Track how engines describe you, not just your star rating. Two measures matter: whether review-driven themes appear in AI answers, and whether the review pages engines cite include you.

Watch the wording. If assistants used to call you "expensive" and the latest answers say "mid-priced, with a free plan", your pricing facts are getting through. If "steep learning curve" persists, the reviews still say so. Ossvy's [brand sentiment](https://ossvy.com/product/brand-sentiment.md) groups the claims engines repeat and links each to the cited sources, so you can see which review pages drive which phrases.

Expect gradual change. Engines that search the web may reflect updated profiles within weeks. Model memory changes only when new models are trained, so long-standing themes take longer to fade.

## Where do reviews fit in GEO?

Reviews are one source type among several. Assistants combine them with comparison articles, your own pages, community discussions and reference sources. Strong reviews won't save a product page that never says who it's for, and a perfect product page won't outweigh a pattern of complaints.

Work on both sides: clear, specific pages of your own, as in our [answer-first content guide](https://ossvy.com/blog/answer-first-content.md), and accurate, active profiles on the platforms engines trust. ## Summary

Review sites shape AI answers by deciding who's listed, how brands are described and which facts get repeated. Find the review platforms engines cite for your prompts, complete and correct your profiles, ask real customers for reviews steadily, respond to recurring complaints and fix their causes. ## Questions and answers

### Do G2 and Capterra reviews affect ChatGPT recommendations?

They can. When ChatGPT searches the web for software questions, review platforms are often among its sources, and their themes shape its wording. Check your sources on the [ChatGPT tracker](https://ossvy.com/product/ai-brand-visibility/chatgpt.md).

### Which review site should I focus on first?

The one engines cite most for your buyer prompts in your main market. It varies by category and country. Find it with [citation tracking](https://ossvy.com/product/citation-tracking.md).

### Can I pay customers for reviews?

Not for reviews expressing a particular sentiment, and fake or undisclosed insider reviews are banned in the US. Check each platform's rules and your local law. Learn what engines repeat about you in [brand sentiment](https://ossvy.com/product/brand-sentiment.md).

### Why does AI still repeat an old complaint about us?

Because the reviews still say it, or the model learned it before you fixed it. Reply with what changed and earn new reviews that describe the fix. Track the wording with [brand sentiment](https://ossvy.com/product/brand-sentiment.md).

### Do reviews matter for B2B and B2C equally?

Both, through different platforms: software directories for B2B, consumer and marketplace reviews for B2C, map reviews for local businesses. See how it works for [e-commerce](https://ossvy.com/solutions/ecommerce.md) and [SaaS](https://ossvy.com/solutions/saas.md).
