How ChatGPT decides which brands to recommend

ChatGPT answers from two places: what the model remembers and what ChatGPT search finds today. Here's how each one picks brands, and what you can change.

In short

ChatGPT recommends brands from two sources: its training data, which favors brands described often and consistently on reputable sites, and ChatGPT search, which cites current pages. To be recommended more, earn mentions on the cited pages, publish clear answers and let OpenAI's search crawler in.

  • Memory answers reward long-term, consistent brand coverage.
  • Search answers reward pages that are cited for the sub-questions.
  • Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search citations.
#

No. ChatGPT doesn't keep a ranked list of brands. Each answer is generated fresh, from the model's training data and, for many questions, from web pages that ChatGPT search retrieves at that moment. That is why the same question can produce different brand lists on different days.

How do memory-based answers choose brands?

#

For general questions, ChatGPT often answers without searching. The model draws on patterns it learned during training: brands that appear frequently in reviews, comparisons, news and reference sites, described in consistent terms, are more likely to come to mind. A brand that launched after the training cut-off, or that is rarely written about by third parties, tends to be missing.

Memory-based answers move slowly. They change when OpenAI releases a new model, not when you publish a new page. Your job here is long-term: build consistent coverage on reputable sites so that future models learn accurate facts about you.

How do search-based answers choose brands?

#

For current, local and comparison questions, ChatGPT searches the web, reads several pages and writes an answer with linked sources (OpenAI). The brands it recommends are largely the brands those pages recommend. Three page types show up again and again:

  • Comparison and "best of" articles that list several products.
  • Review platforms and marketplaces with ratings and user comments.
  • The brand's own pages when they answer the question directly, with prices, features and dates.

OpenAI's search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, builds the index ChatGPT searches, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages on demand (OpenAI crawler docs). If your robots.txt blocks them, ChatGPT can still mention you from memory, but it can't cite your pages.

Why does ChatGPT recommend my competitor and not me?

#

In most cases, one of four things is true:

  1. The cited sources mention your competitor and not you. Check which pages ChatGPT cites for your prompts.
  2. Your pages don't answer the question. A product page that never says who it's for or what it costs is hard to quote.
  3. Your facts are inconsistent. Different prices or descriptions across sites make the model less confident.
  4. Crawlers can't reach you. A firewall or robots rule blocks OpenAI's bots.
#
  1. List the prompts that matter. Write down 30–50 questions buyers ask, especially comparison and "best X for Y" questions.
  2. Record today's answers. Note which brands appear, in which order, and which pages are cited. Do it logged out, with memory off.
  3. Map the source gap. For each prompt you lose, list the cited pages that mention competitors but not you.
  4. Earn those mentions. Pitch the editors, get reviewed on the platforms, join the comparisons.
  5. Rewrite key pages to be quotable. First sentence answers the question; headings are questions; facts have dates and sources.
  6. Allow OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. Check robots.txt and your CDN's bot settings. See our AI crawler list.
  7. Track daily and compare. One check is noise; a 30-day trend is a signal. Ossvy's ChatGPT visibility tracker automates this.

Does ChatGPT treat other languages differently?

#

Yes. When someone asks in Turkish or Arabic, ChatGPT tends to search and cite sources in that language, and the brand list can be completely different from the English answer. If you sell in several markets, track each language separately.

How long does it take to see a change?

#

It depends on which kind of answer you're trying to change. Search-based answers can shift soon after a cited page adds your brand, or after your own page starts answering the question, because ChatGPT reads those pages when it answers. Memory-based answers change only when a new model is trained and released, so the coverage you earn this year mostly pays off in later models.

That's why it helps to track the two kinds of prompts separately. Comparison and "best X for Y" prompts usually trigger a search, while broad category questions are more often answered from memory. Read both as trends over several weeks, never as a single check; our guide to AI visibility metrics explains what to track.

Summary

#

ChatGPT recommends the brands that its training data and its live sources make it confident about. You can't edit the model, but you can change the sources: earn mentions where ChatGPT looks, publish clear answers, keep facts consistent and let OpenAI's crawlers in.

Method

Based on OpenAI's public documentation on ChatGPT search and its crawlers. OpenAI doesn't publish a ranking algorithm, so the patterns described are observations, not official rules. Ossvy sells AI visibility software.

Questions and answers

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. Organic ChatGPT answers are not sold as placements. You can influence them only through the sources ChatGPT learns from and cites. Measure your current position with the free AI visibility check.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing to search?

ChatGPT search uses OpenAI's own index built by OAI-SearchBot together with partner search providers. Being indexed by major search engines still helps. Compare engines on the Microsoft Copilot page.

Why does ChatGPT give different answers to the same question?

Answers are generated fresh each time and may use different retrieved pages, so wording and brand order vary. That's why visibility is measured as a rate over many runs; see prompt tracking.

Does structured data help ChatGPT recommend my products?

It helps engines read product facts like price and availability, especially for shopping answers, but third-party reviews and clear pages matter more. See Ossvy for e-commerce.
